PURGATORIO
April 28th - May 26th
Saturdays and Sundays at 5pm
by Ariel Dorfman
Directed by Jeff Lowe
"Are there crimes for which there can be no forgiveness?"
A man and a woman enter a room. We see only a small bed, two chairs, and a table. Is it an asylum? A prison? Interrogation room? Questions are asked and answered. We feel we know the story. In this room, both the man and woman are faced with the truths of their lives. Playwright Ariel Dorfman puts before us the question of justice and forgiveness. Are there crimes for which there can be no forgiveness? If there is no forgiveness, how do we move on with our lives? PURGATORIO reacquaints us with the tragedy of Jason and Medea.
Perhaps no ancient tale has inspired more debate or provoked more horror. Through Dorfman's evocative language and keen understanding of humanity, we see the story anew through his crystalline lens. The play is a charged, poetic inquiry into human relationships that dangles the possibility of redemption just out of reach

Synopsis:
A man and a woman are stuck in a room. One of them is the patient, the other, a physician. These two people are, though never mentioned in the play by name, Jason and Medea, a man who took an exotic woman as a wife, who bore him children, to only leave her for a woman more like himself in looks only. In response, she killed their two sons and his new bride. The man attempts to get the woman to repent for her sins, and admit her wrongdoings in life, so that she might be reborn again on earth. The scene changes revealing that the woman is now the physician, and the man is the patient, requiring him to do the same thing. The scene switches back to the first scene ending with both the man and the woman being forced to start over from the beginning having broken the one and only rule: The patient can never know the identity of the physician. Either both of them repent, or they must both start over from the beginning of their time, in Purgatorio.
